Take Control of Your Curriculum Like Never Before! We're thrilled to introduce a powerful enhancement to Custom Lessons: the ability to make them Assignable Only. Now, you can create specific typing lessons, tests, or written prompts and keep them hidden from students until you decide it's time for them to appear as a formal assignment.
What's New?
Previously, custom lessons were always visible to students in their "Custom Lessons" section, allowing them to practice anytime. While that's great for general practice, sometimes you need more control – especially for assessments or sequential learning.
The new Assignable Only visibility setting lets you:
-
Create custom lessons (Typing Lessons, Typing Tests, Written Prompts).
-
Keep these lessons hidden from the student's general lesson list.
-
Make the lesson accessible only when you include it as an Assignment.
How Does It Work?
-
Navigate to Custom Lessons: Go to the "Custom Lessons" tab in your teacher dashboard.
-
Understand the Views: You'll see two tabs at the top:
-
Always Visible: Lists lessons students can always see and access for independent practice (the previous default behavior).
-
Assignable Only: Lists lessons hidden from students until formally assigned.
-
-
Create Your Lesson: Click "Create Custom Lesson" and choose the type (Typing Lesson, Typing Test, Written Prompt).
-
Set Visibility: On the lesson creation screen, find the "Visibility" dropdown menu.
-
Select "Visible Only When Assigned". (This is the key step!)
-
-
Configure & Save: Finish setting up your lesson content and click "Create..." or "Save..."
-
Your lesson will now appear under the "Assignable Only" tab.
-
-
Assign the Lesson:
-
Go to the "Assignments" tab.
-
Click "Create an Assignment."
-
Select "Core Curriculum" (even for custom lessons/tests).
-
Choose the relevant Curriculum/Grade level your lesson is associated with.
-
Your "Assignable Only" custom lesson will appear in the list under "Custom Lessons." Select it.
-
Continue through the assignment steps.
-
Click "Create Assignment."
-
Now, students assigned this lesson will see it appear in their "Your Assignments" section on their dashboard, but it won't show up in their regular "Custom Lessons" practice area.
How Does This Help You?
This feature provides greater flexibility and control over your teaching workflow:
-
Precise Pacing: Ensure students encounter specific content exactly when you intend, preventing them from working ahead on material not yet covered.
-
Assessment Integrity: Create custom typing tests or prompts for assessment purposes, knowing students can't access or practice them beforehand.
-
Sequential Learning Paths: Build custom modules and release them step-by-step through assignments.
-
Reduced Clutter: Keep the student's main "Custom Lessons" list focused on evergreen practice materials, while time-sensitive or assessment content is delivered via assignments.
-
Targeted Skill Practice: Prepare specific drills (e.g., focusing on difficult keys, common errors) and assign them only when needed based on class progress.
