Keep Your Computer Lab Keyboards Germ Free!
Tips for keeping computer lab keyboards clean (and germ free)!
It’s that time of year again – flu season. And school computer and laptop keyboards are a haven for bacteria. One way to make sure that you and your students stay as healthy as possible, is to keep your school’s computer keyboards clean and germ free.
Obviously, you can’t just wipe it down with a wet cloth – keyboards are electrical devices and shouldn’t get wet. In addition, dirt and grime aren’t just on the surface – they’re also between the crevasses of your keyboards, making them even harder to clean.
We suggest you work with your students to schedule a keyboard cleaning once a week. To do so, you just need three tools:
- Microfiber cloths
- Compressed air
- Disinfectant wipes
Start by making sure the computers and laptops are powered down. Then, have your students wipe down the surface of their keyboards with a slightly damp microfiber cloth to remove any dry or loose particles of dirt, crumbs, etc.
Next, assign a responsible student to use the compressed air to blow out any dirt and dust between the keys.
Finally use disinfectant wipes to give the keyboards a final wipe down to kill any remaining germs. Be careful not to scrub too vigorously or you could wear down the letters on the keys.
By cleaning the computer lab keyboards with your students at least once a week, you’ll not only extend the life of your keyboards, you’ll also be doing your part to keep yourself and your students healthy.
